To pay off a debt and save his family from ruin, Marcus joins Mimir’s Gatekeepers, a group of famed mercenaries with the ability to travel between worlds. Despite the chance to gain power and wealth beyond imagining, he isn’t thrilled. Fighting demonic beasts from the fringes of reality doesn’t exactly sound like a stable career path. Also, Marcus kinda sucks.
The innate magic he supposedly possesses constantly refuses to manifest, and Marcus finds himself falling further and further behind his fellow recruits. It doesn’t help that his mentor is a flamboyant sorcerer called Cassius, whose main talent seems be annoying and insulting everyone around him.
Following Cassius’ dubious leadership, Marcus is embroiled in a conspiracy that threatens to attack the very foundations of the Gatekeepers. He must find a way save his friends and family by trusting in his meagre skills—and more worryingly, trusting in Cassius.
